BCA Insight supported the Institute of Public Health to update their guidance on Health Impact Assessment (HIA). This island of Ireland guidance is relevant to both the EU and the UK. The guidance aligns ‘HIA’ and ‘health in environmental assessment’, e.g. SEA and EIA. The guidance shows that there can be statutory, policy or voluntary drivers for HIA. The guidance navigates the complexity of four intersecting dimensions of HIA delivery: proposal level; assessment level; integration; and jurisdiction. The relationship between HIA and other types of impact assessment is explained. Issues of health inequalities and health equity are explored in detail. The guidance is framed and split into parts relevant to particular audiences. The guidance does not stop at scoping – it explains how to do the analysis. The guidance can support assessment beyond the island of Ireland.
